Types Of Vehicle Tracking Systems

Vehicle tracking is not just about fitting a tracking device into a certain vehicle and letting another remote piece of hardware home in on the device whenever the need arises. Vehicle tracking is a technology, and like most technologies it has undergone great changes ever since it was first introduced for use within the shipping industry. In addition, like most technologies, vehicle tracking requires a system of some sort for it to operate to its fullest potential.

A device made from a collection or set of electronics, a vehicle tracking system tracks down the location of a particular vehicle either by the owner himself or by third party groups. The system also has a protocol that the electronic devices need so they can perform their duty and be able to communicate with each other.

Modern day vehicle tracking systems include:

GPS - This is perhaps the most inexpensive kind of tracking system used by ordinary citizens. The GPS is a satellite system, controlled and maintained by the government. It’s the most common kind of vehicle tracking today.

Law enforcement vehicles also rely on GPS when they’re doing their job. It’s their primary and most effective way of tracking criminals. GPS has lots of interesting and use characteristics. For example, because it uses satellite tracking, it doesn’t need to be in direct line with the sky anymore.

LoJack- The name of this vehicle tracking system is supposed to be comical, derived from the word “hijack”. This tracking device is manufactured and produced by the LoJack corporation.

Just like GPS, LoJack is a very efficient kind of vehicle tracking system. Based on actual tests, this device is said to have a 90% efficiency rate when it comes to vehicle recovery. LoJack also helps prevent car theft. According to one study, this and systems like it generally helps lessen the occurrence of carjacking.

LORAN, which also makes use of radio frequency like LoJack, is another popular kind of vehicle tracking system.

The Advantages of Real Time Vehicle Tracking

Real time tracking is one of the most advanced tracking systems today. When the transmitter receives the data from the satellite the real time location of the vehicle is determined. That information is then sent to you, allowing you to track your vehicle any time, anywhere.

The Global Positioning System or GPS is the most common method used to track vehicles in real time. A GPS has 24 artificial satellites that orbit the planet and continuously scan different its areas to get an accurate reading of a particular object’s location. Once that data is obtained, the satellites transmit the data to a GPS receiver in the form of microwave signals.

Many people believe that a GPS transmitter should have a clear line of sight with the sky to get an acceptable connection and maintain communication with the satellites. However, it is now possible to establish the necessary connection despite a hazy line of sight. This is what makes the GPS satellite system very attractive as a navigating tool, especially for vehicles. GPS can still track your vehicle even if you get trapped in a jungle, or pass through a tunnel.

Another advantage of the GPS among other navigational systems such as those that utilize radio frequencies and etc. is that the GPS satellite system is being maintained by the government. This is good for two reasons: one, the technology behind the GPS is almost always up-to-date and two, it comes as almost free-of-charge to civilians.

GPS vehicle tracking system providers often provide their clients with different options regarding the quality of vehicle tracking services they wish to subscribe to. For example, one client may wish to avail of a service wherein the server refreshes its data every after 10 seconds. On the other hand, another client may wish to subscribe to a real time vehicle tracking service, where the server refreshes in real time with the vehicle being tracked. Of course the latter service comes at a greater fee, but the quality as well as precision of service is far superior over the former option.

Vehicle or car portable GPS navigation is an inexpensive upgrade to any vehicle. After market navigation units use the newest technology and mapping software to get you from one place to another without error. Also, with today’s advancing technology, you can get portable GPS navigation for far less than the steep price tag that dealerships charge when including factory navigation.

A portable GPS navigation system provides lots of options, besides giving directions. You can use all sorts of items, such as an iPod, cell phone and TV applications. Buying these items as add-ons is really the way to go. These systems provide more than just directions, though. Many of them attach to your windshield and run from the vehicle’s battery. A big bonus of these systems is that they can go just about anywhere- just plug them in to the outlet in your car and go!

The Garmin portable GPS systems even use rechargeable batteries, so they are portable and you do not have to worry about finding an outlet to use them. They are rechargeable; some models can go for eight hours without having to be recharged. The screens are easy to see and read, but they aren’t huge, so they can fit into your travel bag or tote. Others offer other features, such as an iPod player and other audio features.

There is another type of navigation system called the in-dash. In-Dash Navigation units generally include a touch-screen monitor, which lets you enter destination addresses with your finger-tip. These systems can replace your factory radio, and provide control over your entire audio system.

No matter what you drive, there are units available to adapt to your radio model. There are all sorts of things available, such as mp3 adapters, satellite radio, television and cell phone options. You can have all of this, and pay way less than the car manufacturer’s cost to integrate it into the car.

If more points of interest are loaded into the unit the better the chances of you finding a destination with minimal information. Hard drive maps are actually loaded on your unit; updates are as easy as downloading new maps from your home system and loading them onto your hard drive via SD Card or DVD. Actually maps are loaded onto a DVD which must be inserted into the system. New updated DVDs must be bought as time goes by in order to stay current with the growth of your area.

The newer portable GPS units offer convenience, affordability and more advanced functions than earlier models. They may include such features as internal, rechargeable batteries, pre-loaded North America map databases and real time traffic reporting.

There are portable navigation systems priced to fit every budget. Furthermore, the cost is worth the service and entertainment these systems provide. You will never again find yourself lost in a strange city searching for someone to provide you with clear, accurate directions.
